VALVULOPATHIES UNIT
Controller: Dr. Alejandra Carbonell San Román
Valvulopathies are those diseases that affect one or more heart valves, because they either do not open (stenosis) or close (insufficiency) correctly, which influences the proper functioning of the heart. They are very common diseases, with moderate or severe valve disease occurring in people over 65 years of age in up to 6,5% of the population, with aortic valve stenosis being the most common. After an initial suspicion due to the discovery of a murmur, the diagnosis is made through an echocardiogram. Its early detection and treatment is essential to improve its evolution.
Our Valvulopathies unit is responsible for the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients suffering from valvular heart disease. To do this, we have expert medical personnel, as well as the most current technology and treatments to offer optimal management to our patients.

It is a unit designed for the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients with valvular heart disease. It covers from the initial diagnosis with the performance of all the necessary diagnostic tests, to treatment. For a correct diagnosis we use echocardiography, but more advanced modalities such as transesophageal echocardiogram or specific stress tests may be necessary. The treatment of valvular heart disease in less advanced stages is pharmacological; when symptoms appear or according to findings in the echocardiogram Surgical treatment is indicated in which the affected valve is repaired or replaced with a prosthesis. There are alternative less invasive techniques that can be performed in patients at high surgical risk, such as the implantation of an aortic prosthesis through catheterization (TAVI).
