VALVULOPATHIES UNIT
Controller: Dr. Alejandra Carbonell San Román
Valvular heart disease refers to conditions that affect one or more heart valves, either because they don't open (stenosis) or close (insufficiency) properly , thus impacting the heart's function. These diseases are very common, with moderate to severe valvular heart disease affecting up to 65% of the population over 6,5 years of age. Aortic valve stenosis is the most frequent type. After an initial suspicion based on the detection of a heart murmur, the diagnosis is made using an echocardiogram. Early detection and treatment are essential for improving the prognosis.
Our Valvulopathies unit is responsible for the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients suffering from valvular heart disease. To do this, we have expert medical personnel, as well as the most current technology and treatments to offer optimal management to our patients.

This unit is designed for the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of patients with valvular heart disease. It encompasses everything from initial diagnosis, including all necessary diagnostic tests, to treatment. For accurate diagnosis, we use echocardiography, but more advanced modalities such as transesophageal echocardiography or specific stress tests may be required. Treatment for valvular heart disease in its early stages is pharmacological; when symptoms appear or based on echocardiogram findings , surgical treatment is indicated, involving repair or replacement of the affected valve with a prosthesis. There are also less invasive alternative techniques that can be performed in patients at high surgical risk, such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).
