Dr. Constancio Medrano López
Head of the Children's Cardiology and Family Heart Diseases Unit

I am Dr. Constancio Medrano López, responsible for the Pediatric Cardiology and Family Heart Disease Units at UICAR.
What is the Pediatric Cardiology Unit?
This unit is dedicated to the care of pediatric patients with any cardiac problem, or to rule it out when symptoms such as heart murmurs, chest pain, or palpitations are present. Medical care is provided in high-resolution , in- person outpatient clinics (where the consultation and basic tests such as echocardiography and electrocardiogram are performed in the same visit) or via teleconsultations (focused on second opinions or discussing results), optimizing the time of patients and their families and avoiding unnecessary travel. The unit also offers a full range of necessary complementary diagnostic tests, such as Holter ECG monitoring, stress tests, and cardiac imaging studies.
What is the Family Heart Disease Unit?
This is the care unit dedicated to the treatment of cardiovascular problems of genetic, hereditary, and/or familial origin . These include diseases such as cardiomyopathies, channelopathies (such as long QT syndrome and others), and aortic diseases (such as Marfan syndrome). This group of diseases is associated with serious conditions such as sudden death, and its diagnosis is key to prevention. We also study rare diseases or those that present as syndromes (such as heart defects in Down syndrome).
In addition to routine outpatient consultations and tests , genetic studies are performed on both the index case and family members. The unit has adult and pediatric cardiologists for the detailed and coordinated study of entire families. This integrated information, combining personal and family clinical and genetic data, is used to provide specific diagnoses, establish prognoses, offer recommendations in areas such as sports, and prescribe specific treatments, preventive therapies (such as implanting a defibrillator), or, if necessary, interventions (interventional, electrophysiological, or surgical).
The goal of both units is not only to provide the best technical care but also to humanize the experience and focus on the patient and their family . Our aim is to ensure the best possible experience for you, earning your trust in our professionals and giving back to you our best expertise.
My experience spans over 25 years in leading and renowned centers as a pediatric cardiologist, dedicated to clinical practice, research, teaching, management, and collaboration. My specialization includes congenital heart defects of any complexity, hereditary, familial, genetic, or syndrome-associated heart defects, arrhythmias, pulmonary hypertension, and fetal cardiovascular disorders.
