I Conference on Cardiovascular Prevention

Hospital La Luz conducts Atrial Fibrillation screening on more than 280 patients and their companions who visit the hospital for the event

This Monday, the first Cardiovascular Prevention Day was held at La Luz Hospital to detect atrial fibrillation , the leading cause of stroke. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and occurs when, under normal conditions, the heart rate is too high or too low, or the heart rhythm becomes irregular.

The director of La Luz Hospital, Dr. Christian Garriga , emphasized the need for these types of multidisciplinary workshops, in this case, combining Neurology and Cardiology, and especially focusing on preventative care for patients. " Early diagnosis will help achieve better monitoring and management of diseases," Garriga stated.

The head of the Neurology Department at La Luz Hospital, Dr. Oriol Franch , expressed his gratitude for his department's participation in this initiative, emphasizing that cerebrovascular disease is the third leading cause of death and that early detection is crucial and can save lives.

The organizer of this session, Dr. Roberto Martín Reyes, head of the Clinical and Interventional Cardiology Service at Hospital La Luz , highlighted that the new technologies available will help prevent Atrial Fibrillation and explained the causes that can lead to this stroke, such as high blood pressure, heart problems (valve problems, angina, heart attack, etc.).

For just over two hours, more than 280 screenings for Atrial Fibrillation (AF) were carried out in the hospital hall , on patients and family members who came to the hospital center.

The head of the Arrhythmia Unit, Dr. Juan Benezet , discussed the cardiologist's role in stroke prevention and how it can be prevented. He explained to the patients gathered in the conference room that atrial fibrillation can cause symptoms such as palpitations, an irregular heart rate, or the speed at which the heart beats, but it can also be completely asymptomatic. He focused part of his talk on the necessity of documenting the arrhythmia with an electrocardiogram for its diagnosis and subsequent treatment. This arrhythmia specialist reviewed the risk factors for atrial fibrillation , from family history, high blood pressure, and smoking, to elevated levels of fats in the blood (cholesterol and triglycerides), diabetes, and more.

Dr. Lucía Llorente, from the Neurology service at La Luz , closed the round of interventions by showing data from the World Health Organization (WHO) on stroke, the incidence of new cases in Spain (it is the first cause of death from specific entities in women and the second in men), as well as what it represents as the greatest cause of disability, since most patients suffer sequelae, which in 30% of cases make them unable to perform daily activities.

This day has had the special collaboration of Daiichi Sankyo Spain, a pharmaceutical company whose mission is the development of innovative medicines that contribute to improving the health and quality of life of people around the world.
