The Comprehensive Cardiology Unit performs complex TAVI procedures with Edwards prostheses in high-risk patients

The Hemodynamics and Interventional Cardiology Unit of the Comprehensive Cardiology Unit at La Luz University Hospital has successfully performed several highly complex TAVI procedures in patients with aortic stenosis at high surgical risk, including TAVI-in-valve and TAVI in bicuspid aortic valve techniques, using the latest generation Edwards prosthesis .

Minimally invasive procedures for complex patients

Severe aortic stenosis is a common condition in elderly patients with associated comorbidities, who in many cases present a high risk for conventional surgery.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) allows the replacement of the diseased valve through a minimally invasive procedure, usually via the femoral artery, reducing recovery times and complications associated with open surgery.

On this occasion, the team has tackled two particularly complex scenarios:

  • TAVI-in-valveThis procedure is indicated for patients with a previously implanted surgical bioprosthesis that has degenerated over time. It involves implanting a new transcatheter valve within the existing prosthesis, thus avoiding a surgical reintervention.
  • TAVI in bicuspid aortic valve: a more challenging anatomy due to the irregular morphology of the valve, requiring advanced image planning and extensive technical expertise.

Leadership and experience in structural heart disease

The procedures were performed by the Hemodynamics team under the direction of Dr. Jorge Palazuelos , head of the Unit, together with Dr. Javier Martín Moreiras , interventional cardiologist specializing in Structural Heart Disease at UICAR, and Dr. Luis Nombela , member of the Interventional Cardiology team.

Experts emphasize that "correct patient selection, prior study with advanced imaging techniques and the experience of the multidisciplinary team are key to success in these types of complex interventions."

Technological innovation at the service of the patient

The use of Edwards prostheses , internationally recognized for their precision and hemodynamic profile, allows for the optimization of clinical results even in complex anatomies such as the bicuspid valve or in valve-in-valve procedures.

These advances consolidate the Comprehensive Cardiology Unit of the La Luz University Hospital as a center of reference in structural intervention , offering safe and effective therapeutic alternatives to patients who previously had limited options.
