Dr. Miguel Pérez-Carasa

I am Dr. Miguel Pérez-Carasa, Clinical Cardiologist at UICAR.
What is the scope of Clinical Cardiology?
Cardiovascular diseases continue to be the leading cause of death in the world. This is also the case for Spain, above other pathologies such as cancer, infectious diseases or traffic accidents.
Within the group of circulatory diseases, ischemic heart diseases (infarction or angina pectoris) continue to occupy first place in the number of deaths. This is mainly due to the high presence of cardiovascular risk factors, such as tobacco, hypertension, diabetes or cholesterol. The increase in stress and the lack of healthy habits explain the increase in circulatory diseases, ischemic heart diseases and cerebrovascular diseases, as well as the considerable increase among women due to their increasing access to responsible jobs with greater stress. .
Coronary heart disease or ischemic heart disease is the most common, the cause of more than 30% of cardiovascular mortality. In the case of arrhythmias, more than 4% of Spaniards over 40 years of age suffer from atrial fibrillation, which is the most common arrhythmia.
The most common symptoms of heart disease that should alert us are chest pain or tightness with effort or at rest, rapid heartbeat or irregular heartbeat, dizziness or loss of consciousness, excessive tiredness or feeling of shortness of breath, swelling of the feet. .
Clinical cardiology constitutes the foundation on which the specialty rests. The growing innovation of diagnostic tests, especially imaging, emphasizes even more its importance, since it is the Clinical Cardiologist who must integrate clinical information with complementary tests.
