Private healthcare is consolidating its position as a driver of innovation and prevention in the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) , a condition that already affects 15,1% of adults in Spain . This was highlighted at a recent session of the IDIS Foundation's Innovation Committee , held in collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim , where solutions promoting early diagnosis and more efficient management of kidney, cardiovascular, and metabolic diseases were discussed.
During the meeting, Dr. Roberto Martín Reyes , head of the Comprehensive Cardiology Unit , presented the Comprehensive Heart Failure Care Model , an initiative that has reduced hospital readmissions within 30 days by 50% and decreased mortality by 8% . This model exemplifies how coordination between specialties and levels of care can transform the treatment of patients with chronic conditions.
“Moving towards a more preventative healthcare model requires integrating the cardiological, renal, and metabolic perspectives of the patient. Only in this way can we act earlier, with greater precision, and with better clinical outcomes,” Dr. Martín Reyes stated during his presentation.
The session also highlighted the serious underdiagnosis of CKD , as two out of three patients remain undiagnosed , delaying the start of treatment and accelerating disease progression. In this regard, Boehringer Ingelheim presented projects such as Intercede and IntERKit , which provide practical tools, monitoring indicators, and specific processes to improve early detection and comprehensive management of CKD, especially in primary care.
These initiatives, based on multidisciplinary collaboration and technological innovation, seek to strengthen the role of clinical laboratories in the detection and monitoring of chronic diseases, as well as contributing to the sustainability of the health system.
During the session, Ana Gallego, head of Access and CRM Healthcare Solutions at Boehringer Ingelheim, highlighted the importance of applying scalable and sustainable care models that promote more proactive and patient-centered care.
The meeting, presented by Marta Villanueva , general director of the IDIS Foundation, and Guillem Bruch , director of Market Access and Healthcare Management at Boehringer Ingelheim, also included the participation of Ángel Lanuza , Capture Manager at Accenture Spain, and Dr. Ángel de Benito , director of Operations at the IDIS Foundation, who emphasized the value of collaboration between the public and private healthcare sectors to improve healthcare efficiency.
“These types of forums allow us to share experiences and results that demonstrate that clinical innovation, when applied in a coordinated manner, improves the survival and quality of life of patients,” added Dr. Martín Reyes.
Dr. Martín Reyes' role in this session reinforces his commitment to evidence-based medicine, interdisciplinary integration, and the promotion of care models focused on prevention and the patient, essential pillars for the future of modern cardiology.
